The sayings on these Necco and Brach's sweet treats are reviewed and changed every year to stay current, but the classics are just canon. According to a rep from Brach's, the Queen Bee of Candy Hearts, “LOVE YOU” is America's favorite conversation heart message, chosen by 50% of people surveyed this year.
Among the 26 different phrases are "how u doin?," "pivot," "on a break" and "lbstr." The sitcom-themed candies also switch up the usual flavors with a new blend of watermelon, strawberry, blueberry, pineapple, cherry and orange.
The other hearts, however, have no shortage of bon mots. There are at least 60 cute and peppy messages in this year's production. Original mottos from the candy's first appearance in 1902, such as “Be Mine,” “Be True” and “Kiss Me,” remain very popular.
For me, it's the gimmick that really makes conversation hearts great. Traditionally, conversation hearts are printed with personal and romantic messages like “XOXO,” “Kiss Me,” and “Email Me.” More current examples include “Text Me” and “Bae.”
How many different Sweetheart sayings are there? We have about 80 different sayings each year. We try to have about 20 new sayings, and then we keep about 30 to 35 of the older ones like "Be Mine." The rest are a mix of ones from previous years or phrases that are popular enough that we need more of them.
Sweethearts might have been made by Necco, but they tasted a bit different than the well-known wafers. In recent years, the colorful hearts were updated to be bolder and fruitier, with flavors like orange, grape, strawberry, and green apple.
